Your line in the sand
One of the best ways to figure out if you are headed in the right direction with your business is by putting a line in the sand.
The thing I like about this is that the line is in sand.
You can definitely see that line, but it’s very much changeable.
Sometimes the minute you draw the line, you realize it needs to be changed. Something about it doesn’t sound or look quite right. It just feels off. And luckily, since it’s in sand, that’s pretty easy to do.
But even if you realize the line is ‘off’, you still aren’t sure how you want to change it. You still aren’t sure what direction to take. Even so, that line in the sand taught you something. It showed you a direction that ISN’T the one you want to take. That’s incredibly valuable. Businesses of all sizes want to know which way not to go. This intentional line in the sand and the thought process that follows help you choose and eliminate directions, all of which save you time.
The first step in the 4-step Finding Your Wedge process is creating your Starting Point Sentence. Think of it as your line in the sand. It’s changeable, editable, moveable. In fact, you WANT to change it. You need it to be in sand.
You may decide to sit with your Starting Point Sentence for a (little) while. While you are sitting with it and thinking you aren’t sure what to do next, do step 2 in the process: Look at your Inspo-Competitors. That will give you some ideas for the first updates to your line. Then, go to step 3 and step 4.
Even after step 4, there’s a chance you’ll still feel like your line is in sand. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as many times as you need to get settled on your wedge statement.
See you next week.
